The Old English term
“welig”, meaning “willow”, is the origin of the name Wylwen, which is given to the village due to the presence of willow trees growing on the banks of the River Mimram as it passes through the area. The name Wylwen is an evolution of “weligun”, which is the dative form of the word, and thus translates more accurately to “at the willows”. In contrast, the nearby village of Willian is believed to mean simply “the willows”.
