The original name of Sandridge was “Saundruage,” which referred to a location with sandy soil and bonded tenants. Its earliest recorded mention was in 796, and the parish was part of the revenue of the Mercian Kings. In the first year of his reign, Egfrith, son of Offa, gave it to abbot Eadric, the second
abbot of St Alban’s Monastery, and the monks of St Albans.
In 1887, part of the parish of Sandridge was added to the Municipal Borough of St Albans, while the rest was renamed Sandridge Rural in 1894. The formation of Sandridge Rural Parish Council led to this change in name.
