The Barn Theatre, situated in Handside, Welwyn Garden City, England, is a community theatre that was established in 1931 after converting a 17th-century timber-framed barn. This building is Grade II listed and features two performance areas, a main auditorium, and a studio, and is operated by The Barn Theatre Club, a local amateur theatre company.
In 2014,
dendrochronology analysis determined that the original barn or barns that make up the current structure were constructed using timbers from 1597, which were most likely procured from the nearby Sherrardspark Wood. The current building was erected on its present site on Handside Lane in the 1830s as part of Lower Handside Farm.
Initially built as a cowshed, it was later transformed into a theatre and opened its doors in January 1932. The Barn Theatre Club, formed by merging the Welwyn Drama Club and the Welwyn Folk Players, was created in 1969.
The Barn Theatre building was granted Grade II listed status on 4 November 1980 and was purchased by the Barn Theatre Trust in 1984.
