Brookmans Park is a village in Hertfordshire, southeast England, which is famous for its BBC transmitter station. The village is served by Brookmans Park railway station on the East Coast Main Line, which is operated by Great Northern. The station is also used as a waypoint in air navigation by Heathrow Airport. According to local legend, “Little Miss Muffet” from the popular nursery rhyme was based on Patience Moffat, daughter of the entomologist Dr. Thomas Moffat (possibly spelled Moffett or Moufet), who lived on a farm in the area from 1553 to 1604. Moffat had invited a poet to spend Christmas with him, and during his stay, the poet overheard Miss Moffat telling her father about how she was eating curds and whey when a spider appeared and frightened her. The poet then wrote the rhyme, making an alteration to Miss Moffat’s name. However, the origins of the rhyme are not entirely clear, as the first printed version did not appear until 1805. The local connection to the nursery rhyme is celebrated by the inclusion of a spider’s web in the badge of Brookmans Park School.
