Betchwood Hall, constructed in 1874 for Edmund Beckett, 1st Baron Grimthorpe, showcases the Queen Anne architectural style and is renowned for featuring the prototype of the Great Clock found in the clock
tower of the Palace of Westminster. St Albans Council obtained the property in 1935 and commissioned John Henry Taylor to develop an 18-hole golf course on the site. In the 1970s, Betchwood Hall was converted into an event venue. Unfortunately, the Batchwood Tennis and Golf Centre, located on the property, was completely destroyed by an arson attack in August 2011. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the venue has been utilized as a vaccination centre by a local GPs consortium.
